BIG NEWS! Senegal has renamed its slave port in the famous Goree Island from European Port to Freedom & Human Dignity Port. It had names one of its main squares on the island European Square in 2003 by Mayor Senghor and the then President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi. Its is crazy that this was done as recently as 2003, what a shame for their ancestors.
But after the anti-racism campaigns have taken the world by a storm, the Senegalese government has been inspired to change their name to European Port to Freedom and Human Dignity Port.
What is Goree Island?
The island of Gorée lies off the coast of Senegal, opposite Dakar. From the 15th to the 19th century, it was the largest slave-trading centre on the African coast. Ruled in succession by the Portuguese, Dutch, English and French, its architecture is characterized by the contrast between the grim slave-quarters and the elegant houses of the slave traders. Today it continues to serve as a reminder of human exploitation and as a sanctuary for reconciliation.
